Topical Pain Management

Our Compounding Pharmacists can blend a wide range of medications into compounded transdermal creams and gels in a base that enhances absorption of the medication.

Transdermal pain therapy utilizes the skin to deliver medications for a vast array of pain conditions. These topical treatments deliver high concentrations of medications deep into tissue at the site of injury/illness, avoiding the unpleasant side effects of oral medicines. When medications are administered transdermally, they are not absorbed through the gastrointestinal system and do not undergo first-pass hepatic metabolism. By combining various agents which utilize different mechanisms to alter the sensation of pain, practitioners have had great success in treating chronic pain.

Pain creams are compounded with PCCA’s Lipoderm™ Base, which has been proven effective in facilitating percutaneous absorption of topical pain medications. Ingredients can include a customized combination of the following medications:

  • Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS): Ketoprofen, Piroxicam
  • Muscle Relaxants: Cyclobenzaprine, Baclofen
  • Anesthetics: Lidocaine, Prilocaine
  • Vasodilators: Nifedipine, Verapamil
  • Pain Blockers: Ketamine
  • Nerve Agents: Amitriptyline, Gabapentin
  • Other Medications: Amantadine, Clonidine
